All jewels are guaranteed to be in 18k gold, or in sterling silver. Works in precious metals like gold, silver and platinum are guaranteed by the French State. A punch attests every jewel weighing more than 3g of gold or more than 30g of silver, after being checked by the French Warranty Service.
The tsuba (鍔) is usually a round guard at the end of the grip of bladed Japanese weapons, like the katana. Designed more for functionality than for decoration at first, tsuba became more ornamental and made of less practical metals such as gold during the Edo period (1603–1868).
Tsuba are usually finely decorated, and nowadays are collectors' items. They were made by whole dynasties of craftsmen whose only craft was making tsuba. In addition to being collectors items, they were often used as heirlooms, passed from one generation to the next.
